Mason Parker owner of Mason’s Creations in Portland, Oregon has created an amazing stained glass octopus chandelier. This incredible chandelier is made by a combination of fused and stained glass techniques. It will fit inside a roughly 5′ spherical space, ideally near a stairwell in a big living room as the customer in the lower photo has.
Small Story From Mason Parker Facebook Mason's Creations has produced detailed renditions of Lepidoptera and a variety of other stained and fused glass pieces since it's origins in Deerfield Massachusetts. Now based in Portland Oregon since 2007, specializes in a high quality of sea creature oriented lamps.
Before I start any significant stained glass piece I ask myself if would I be able to do justice with my abilities, to this life form that I witnessed when I was out walking or saw a picture of in a nature book.
Other times my inspiration is one that would make a good functional piece, such as an octopus made into the chandelier. This serves to make nature accessible without having to travel to a natural history museum or aquarium. And for practical purposes, immortal too.
Then I proceed to figure out how I can render it with the already vibrant colors of the glass itself and how to make the solder lines flow with its anatomy. I then use a combination of copper foil stained glass and glass fusion techniques, including using powder frit and slumping on the small components, which allows me to get finer details or 3-D effect where solder and foil are impractical.
