Dr. Stewart Kwane is a heroic veterinarian who is making a real difference in the world.
He has always been an animal lover and spent much of his formative years trying to save stray animals, and this eventually set him on the path to becoming a veterinarian and he’s been saving countless of animals ever since.
Now, he’s known as “The Street Vet” because of the amazing work he’s doing to help the pets of California’s homeless population.
Back in 2007, when the US was hit by an economic crisis, Dr. Kwane began to realize that in order to be truly helpful and make a difference in the world, he needed to start helping those who were struggling to provide their animals with proper medical care. “I’d been practising high-end medicine for clients who could pay for everything.
Poverty is hard enough to suffer on your own, but being unable to give someone you love the help they need is absolutely soul-crushing. And unfortunately, that is the reality for many of our poor.
But Dr. Kwane is trying his best to give as many people as possible access to veterinary care for their beloved pets. Since 2011, he’s been out on the streets of California, offering free treatments.
Dr. Kwane originally started off by setting up a soup kitchen and offering free check-ups and he was blown away by the response; people immediately started lining up to see him. Dr. Kwane quickly realized that there was a great demand for his services, and now he spends his weekends walking around and offering his services free of charge.
Thanks to his trusty medical bag, Dr. Kwane is able to treat a number of minor ailments on the spot. But if a pet has a more serious complaint, that doesn’t mean that they’re out of luck; Dr. Kwane is happy to pay for medical bills, vaccines and anything else they need to recover.
Dr. Kwane even covers the cost of surgeries and other major treatments, which can cost several thousand dollars.
Dr. Kwane’s compassion, skill and dedication have changed the lives of countless people and their pets. He is saving lives and providing an essential service for people who, if it wasn’t for him, would have nowhere to turn to for help.
For many homeless people, their pets are an important source of love and companionship. Homeless people are often faced with prejudice and abuse, but their pets offer them a ray of happiness and hope.
