Brodie is a German Shepherd – Border Collie mix. This dog became an instant internet star because of its unique facial features.
When it comes to beauty, many people would base it on their features. The human brain automatically distinguishes what’s beautiful and what’s not based on what we believe in. Symmetry means beauty. And unbalanced features means weird or ugly. And yes, that is a sad truth, even for animals.
Brodie’s face is unique not because he was born with it. When he was only 13 days old, his mother bit him in the face and it injured him badly.
During an interview with Brodie’s owner, Amanda Richter, she shared that Brodie’s moms’ became hostile was probably due to a random instance of food aggression. She explained, “He might have gotten a bit too close to her food dish and just got a chomp on the head.” This tragedy happened when Brodie and his mom were still living in the dog shelter in Ponoka County, Alta. At the time of the incident, the vet looked at Brodie’s wound and knew that even though the pooch lost a lot of blood, he will be okay. But when he got older, the shelter realized that Brodie will never look like other dogs in the shelter. CBC News Calgary interviewed Brad Ames, Richter’s partner and talked about Brodie. He said, “As he got older, all these deformities started to show. That bulging eye. His skull is kind of pushing out on his eye. He has trouble breathing. He is partially blind in the little eye that actually looks OK.” What they didn’t know was that Brodie’s skull had been crushed by his mother’s bite. Ames also noticed that Brodie’s jaw was partially fused. Richter saw Brodie’s adoption photos on Facebook. It was her habit to check out local adoption photos. She said that when he saw Brodie, she knew that there was something about him. He was the first dog that she saw and told her Brad (Ames) that they had to meet him. They were lucky because they were the first ones to visit Brodie even though his adoption photos were receiving thousands of likes online. They knew instantly that they had to adopt him. And they did!
