A lot has been said and written about stereotypes surrounding Pit Bulls, and it looks like more and more people are starting to understand that a dog’s behavior has more to do with the way they were brought up by their owners, and less with aspects that are linked to genetic.
Still, there is still a long way ahead when it comes to changing the way most people see Pit Bulls. The truth is that many people out there still see these dogs as being instinctively violent. It's why they are afraid to have them anywhere near their children and even near themselves. It's why many people cross the street if they see a Pit Bull coming their way.
Well, this is exactly why we need more stories like this one. Stories have the power to challenge stereotypes and show us that it's never okay to judge a book by its cover and assume certain things are true just because they were said over and over again.
The main character of this impressive story is an incredible dog named Kiah, the first ever pit bull officer in New York state. Just like many dogs are there, he was abandoned by his previous owner in a grocery store parking lot. His owner just disposed of him as if he was just a thing you could throw into the garbage once it is of no use to you.
Luckily for Kiah, he managed to change its life around, and graduated from a program that trains rescued pit bulls to be police k9s.These amazing trainings are great because they serve multiple purposes.
For once, they help get more dogs off the streets and give them a new chance at a happy life. Secondly, they help make the streets a little bit safer by having an extra set of eyes (and paws) protecting people in the community.
In the last years it became pretty common for a pit bull to join the K9's, just like Leonard, Ohio's first pit bull police officer!
