Orangutans, great Asian great apes found in the rainforest areas of the South Asian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, are such beautiful creatures!
Did you know that the adult male orangutan is twice the size of its female? It is fascinating!
Clara, an orangutan mom, lost her baby after local male dominance took it from her. That was, of course, a big surprise for her and one day she dreamed of seeing each other again.
Before long, Clarita was rescued by the Orangutan Survival Foundation. The park staff decided to reunite the mother and baby. Still, they also had some fears.
“The mother can reject the baby if it smells different from the first time”
Their reunion was so moving! Baby Clarita was reintroduced to Clara, who was slowly trying to touch her through her cage. After a while it turned out that Clara remembers her baby. She is such a devoted mother! Clarita stopped crying as soon as she was in her mother’s arms and the staff noticed that Clara had offered her milk. Unfortunately, orangutans are going extinct. A century ago, 230,000 orangutans lived in South Asia. Today that number has dropped to 41,000 Bornean orangutans and 7,500 Sumatran orangutans. It’s so sad!
