For most of his life, Bobby Humphreys had owned three Rottweilers with his wife. So, he always saw him as a “big dog guy” and laughed when his friends would walk their tiny dogs. He never even thought of adopting a tiny dog like a Chihuahua.
“I actually would poke fun at any of my guy friends to happened to date someone who owned a small dog. I had truly just never had given one a chance.” But then, Bobby’s life abruptly changed when his marriage of 17 years fell apart. He was heartbroken, fell into a deep depression and even he wanted to end his own life. However, his friend Connie refused to leave his side and helped him through this dark period.
“My friend, Connie, had shown me what friendship really meant. No matter what I needed, she was there for me. Needless to say, I feel I owe to her quite a bit.” Bobby told I Heart Dogs. One day, Connie asked Bobby if he would take care of her beloved Chihuahua Lady in for a while. He was hesitant as he had met Lady before and she had seemed unfriendly. Not to mention, Humphreys used to make fun of men like him who had small dogs like Lady. Still, Bobby decided to help his friend because he felt that he owed Connie. His decision ended up saving not only his life, but the lives of 30 Chihuahuas as well.
When Bobby brought Lady home, the tiny dog acted as Bobby has never seen her before. To his surprise, the little Chihuahua crawled in his lap, spent time with him and they had quickly bonded. When Connie came to check on Bobby and Lady, she was stunned by the sight of the two snuggling. From that moment on, Bobby had a newfound love for little dogs.
After Lady went back to live with Connie, Bobby decided to adopt a Chihuahua of his own. He found Kira, a one-year-old pup, who was rescued from the terrible conditions her previous owners kept her in. Bobby actually saved the pup and helped show her how to love and trust people again.
Bobby started taking home more and more Chihuahuas, who have had rough beginnings or special needs. Eventually, he decided to start his passion project – an animal rescue group: Big Guy, Little World Sanctuary.
“We rescue Chihuahuas who are living horrible lives, abused, starving, disabled, mental issues, etc. We give them either a forever home with us where they will never have to experience neglect or anything like that again, or we nurse them back to health and adopt them out! We just want to help as many babies as we can,” Bobby said.
Bobby is a big guy with an even bigger heart! Now he’s responsible for saving the lives and caring for over 30 Chihuahuas. If you want to see more adorable photos of Bobby’s dogs, follow his Facebook page.
