We have heard so much about odd friends in the animal kingdom. And one of those is of cats and dogs. Still, it is rare to find a cat befriending a dog. We can forget about the old adage, “fighting like cats and dogs” because this newly adopted cat-and-dog duo relies on cooperation and teamwork. They simply have a special bond that can’t be broken.
Spike and Max are an unlikely pair. The two inspire us all to love life and to stick close to the ones that we can truly count on.
“Spike” is an 8-year-old mixed breed dog. At some point, Spike’s eyes needed to be removed. Painful cataracts forced the removal of Spike’s eyes. But he was able to get through this because he has “Max,” an 8-year-old feline who has been his lifelong feline friend and companion.
On January 25th, the duo’s former family surrendered them to Saving Grace Animal Society. And since then, this animal shelter in Alberta, Canada had been caring for them. These two had been waiting for a long time to get adopted.
In an interview with CBC News, Amanda McClughan with the shelter said that the pair had been living mostly outside. And their special friendship probably started when they had no choice but to huddle together for warmth to save each other from the intense cold of the night. McClughan added that Max became Spikes’ “support cat.” She said, “Max just provides a level of comfort and support for him. He can smell him, he can feel him, and so it’s kind of a way to bring his stress and his anxiety down.” Then on February 9th, the shelter decided to feature the pair on their Facebook page in an effort to find Max and Spike their new forever home. The post reads: “Spike is an 8 yr old medium mixed breed with no eyesight – he is completely blind, but don’t feel bad for him, he LOVES LIFE and is a happy boy. He is most happy when he can rest his head on someone’s lap and he may be blind but you better believe that if you stop petting him he will find you. From what we’ve learned about Spike so far he is just a happy-go-lucky boy who seems to be great with everything. Due to no sight, loud noises can be overwhelming for him so a quieter home would be best for him but other than that he could fit into almost any environment with owners willing to show him the ropes and be patient with him. He’s 8 years young and ready to spend the rest of his life being spoiled with his buddy Max. ”
